Rancho Santana School

Facing the challenge of rising student enrollment, the California school district required a cutting-edge facility to accommodate its growing population. The result was a new TK-8th grade school, constructed on a 12-acre site with an investment of $51 million. This ambitious project was executed through a design-build collaboration involving JL Modular, Otto Construction, and NMR Architects, and features a modern two-story layout with three distinct buildings. The campus includes 35 classrooms and a dedicated administration/library building, designed to serve approximately 850 students.

The primary objective of this project was to provide a state-of-the-art educational environment to address the needs of the expanding student body. To achieve this, the school was built using advanced permanent modular construction techniques. This innovative approach combined the durability and aesthetic qualities of traditional site-built construction with the speed and cost-efficiency of modular methods. Steel-framed modular sections were prefabricated off-site and then transported to the site, where they were assembled and finished, greatly expediting the construction process.

One of the key challenges was managing the extensive sitework required alongside the modular construction. JL Modular handled the building construction while Otto Construction managed the sitework, ensuring a seamless integration of all project components. The result is a highly functional, modern facility that supports effective learning and meets the district’s educational needs.

The new school has significantly benefited the community by providing a contemporary learning environment that supports educational excellence. The project’s use of modular construction techniques not only reduced the overall construction time but also kept costs under control, delivering a high-quality educational facility in a timely and budget-conscious manner.
